Untonne

At Untonne, we set out to make climate change an issue of the past for the next generation. Our solutions are specifically designed to minimize harmful emissions and encourage reforestation. As an organization, we are committed to actively addressing climate change while restoring ecology and improving the lives of people across the globe.

Reduce emissions. Restore the planet.

Improved Cookstoves

Significantly reducing harmful smoke that results in over four million premature deaths annually.

Tree Planting

Promoting reforestation and doing good for our planet while creating local jobs in developing nations.

Hi, I’m Geoff Bastian.

In my early 20s, I learned that about three billion people rely on a simple fire or wood-burning stove for cooking their daily meals. These stoves are often located inside homes without a chimney, resulting in harmful smoke emissions – which are one of the leading causes of premature death and significant burns among children in developing nations.

In 2003, I enrolled in an internship at Aprovecho Research Center where I researched and tested fuel-efficient wood-burning cookstoves. These cookstoves were designed to not only help reduce the health and safety concerns of a traditional fire, but also cut back on wood use by approximately 50%.

Upon completing my internship, I worked in the energy industry where I delivered residential heating and renewable energy solutions. Despite the great work I’ve done to address climate change through supporting the deployment of carbon-free energy, I’ve always wanted to find a way to share climate solutions – like clean cookstoves – that have a huge humanitarian impact too.

In an interview with a former mentor, I was surprised to learn that despite the many benefits and substantial global awareness of improved cookstoves, billions of people still lacked access to them. A few years later, I decided to establish Untonne with a mission to get more cookstoves in the hands of the world's poorest nations, all while doing something good for the planet.

Did You Know?

Although the United States only makes up 5% of the global population, we are responsible for approximately 15% of global emissions. This comes from the cars we drive, the energy we use, the goods and services we consume, and the food that we eat.
